What is a FRTOL?
A FRTOL is a Flight RadioTelephony Operator’s Licence, otherwise known as an RT licence. It is a UK only rating that you must hold to operate a radio on a UK a registered aircraft.
FRTOL Training
In early 2023, the CAA mandated training for the FRTOL, whereas previously none was required. This training must comply with the syllabus laid out on CAA form SRG 1171.
RT Courses
To satisfy the requirements of SRG1171, Ravenair runs regularly RT courses. These courses are conducted in small groups and run for 5 sessions, with each session being 2 hours long. During the course, where operationally possible, a visit to the Air Traffic Control tower is also included.
Course dates and times are varied to accommodate as many people as possible, so please get in touch for our latest availability. The course costs £99.
RT Exam
We can also conduct the FRTOL exam that you must pass to gain your FRTOL. There are 2 parts to the exam:
-
Theory exam (this is the Communications theory exam from the PPL course, so if you are undertaking PPL training, you will have already completed this)
-
Practical exam
When attending your practical exam, you must bring your ID and a signed SRG1171 form. The exam takes around 2 hours, and our course will prepare you for the exam.
RT practical examinations cost £132.
